I've never been a big fan of Jack White so I found the initial hype hard to grasp. I really need to stop doing that because often it comes about from the collective opinion of people who (mostly) don't have any personal biases coming into the music. Perhaps it helped that I eventually came into the album with no particular expectations. There's actually quite a bit to like here. Plenty of catchy hooks too and it makes for a solid effort.
Quite a solid effort, I can't say I was hoping for better because I knew from the first two singles that it wasn't going to be White Stripes-y. It's impossible not to compare it to White Stripes though, and I think there are a number of distinct influences that are noticeable throughout.
