What can I say really? Arca just doesn’t have a sound that I can get in to.
Straight as we get started, “Piel” sets up an ominous atmosphere, an atmosphere which continues for the rest of the record.
This sound continues and closes in around you, and it can certainly leave its mark on you at some points.
“Reverie”, for example, is hypnotic in the best kind of way. I was completely immersed for its 3-minute duration.
Even “Whip” too, which was an unexpectedly funny moment for me, because it just sounded out-of-place, but the layering of the whip sound effects over one another kind-of works together musically.
But elsewhere there isn’t all that much I can say about the album. It just doesn’t leave an impression on me for the most part.
I feel this album is much more about the atmosphere it sets, and the matter of whether you can get into it is very much a time-and-place type of thing.
I could try talking about this from a lyrical perspective, but I would just be speaking out of my arse, as I have no idea what he is talking about, but judging on the mood, I imagine what he is delivering to us is very personal and close to him.
I appreciate that this is considered one of the best albums of the year so far, and I can certainly understand the reasons why that is so, but it just doesn’t do it for me.
