The Chainsmokers feat. Rozes - Roses

I will often note that I have a fondness for (often electronic) pop songs that feel just a little too off kilter for widespread play. It rings especially true in a time when quality control can slip and anything will be accepted as long as it's on trend. Not that I'm suggesting The Chainsmokers are especially bogarts of quality, we've got enough evidence to suggest otherwise. But this song struck a chord with me. It passes the 'not fit for hitting the big time' test in 3 ways:

1. The title isn't in the song, and neither is the artist name
2. Two of the main hooks in the song are unintelligible. Try for yourself to Google for the song if the only things you can remember about it are 'i i i i...' or 'ah ah ah, ah ah ah'
3. The main instrumental hook is out of left field, and really along with the aforementioned hooks, is so stuttery that I can see it resting uncomfortably on a lot of ears, and it seems like an odd thing to try and dance to

But, I like when a song challenges the listener like that. Not automatically of course, but this one just so happens to hit the spot for me, and I'm kind of thrilled to see it as a big success.
